Q:How do Epsom salts work?
A: Often a massage therapist will recommend that you take a bath with Epsom salts after having a massage treatment. The high magnesium ion content of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) promotes the release of lactic acid from the muscles. By flushing out the lactic acid build-up in the muscle cells, Epsom salts effectively relieve the discomfort related to muscle tension and extends the benefits of a massage treatment. Taking an Epsom salts bath increases circulation and metabolism and has an overall detoxifying effect on the body.
Using 2-4 cups of Epsom salts in a warm bath for 15-20 minutes is encouraged to relieve arthritic pain, muscle aches, and chronic injuries, as well as after strenuous exercise or deep tissue massage.
Pregnant women, persons with high or low blood pressure, or persons with heart conditions should not take epsom salts baths without prior medical consultation because of the increases in metabolism and circulation that can result.
Q: How much water should I be drinking every day?
A: Since we all have different levels of activity and body size, we all have different hydration needs. A general rule to follow is to drink one 8 oz glass of water for every 20lbs of body weight per day. For example, if you weigh 140lbs, you should be drinking at least seven glasses of water or 1.5 litres of water per day. If you are perspiring due to exercise or excessive heat, you will need additional fluid to replenish what you are losing. |
Q: How can I use heat or cold to prevent or relieve a headache?
A: Many people experience tension headaches as a result of increased muscle tension in the face, neck and shoulders. If the muscles of your neck or shoulders feel tight and stiff at the end of a busy workday, try applying a warm gel pack or beanbag to your neck and shoulders. You can also apply a warm rung-out face cloth to your face for 10-15 minutes (re-warming the cloth as necessary). This will be very soothing to your tired muscles, and may prevent the tension from building to the point where it will induce a headache.
Conversely, if you are experiencing a headache try applying a cooled gel pack or beanbag to the back of your neck. This will draw blood down out of the head, reduce any inflammation of the muscles of the neck and shoulders and provide relief from the headache.
